Casa Chiquita

Casa Chiquita is Spanish and means “very little house”. It is located near the old north road to the entrance of the canyon and is thought to have been built around 1100 AD.

It was built on top of a hillside and is an excellent example of how the Chacoan masons used elevated areas or positioned their buildings next to towering cliffs. It measures about 60 by 75 feet and contains possibly 65 rooms and two kivas, originally standing two or three stories high. A trail beginning at Casa Chiquita follows an old wagon road down the Chaco Wash leading to Penasco Blanco. Along this trail numerous rock art and historic inscriptions can be seen on the cliff face on the north side of the trail.

Directions

From the parking lot at the end of the paved road, follow an old road west to Kin Kletso. Stay on the trail and you will reach Casa Chiquita after about 0.7 miles.
