20 Mule Team Road is a short byway off 190 close to Zabrieski Point that allows you to drive for a short distance through the badlands surrounding Zabrieski Point. The road is named after the 20 mule team borax route that was used to haul borax from the Harmony Borax Works in Death Valley to the railhead at Mojave.
Each team of 18 mules and 2 horses hauled a 30 ton load (2 borax wagons and a 500 gallon water wagon) over 165 miles of desert in 10 days.
Directions
The road is a one-way road, if you are entering Death Valley via 190, you will find the entrance after about 8 miles to your left. If you are starting at Furnace Creek, follow 190 for about 6 miles and the entrance will be to your right (shortly after you have passed Zabrieski point).
